"The Year the Gypsies Came" is the title
of Linzi Glass's debut novel. It's the story of 11-year-old Emily, who lives in
1960s Johannesburg. However, her parents often quarrel, and the way to cure the
tensions seems to be to take in guests from time to time, so Emily looks forward
to these guests. Then an Australian couple and their 2 boys come to stay. Emily
becomes friends with Streak, while her older sister Sarah takes the brain
damaged Otis in hand. But then their lives are changed by a tragedy... Emily is
also friends with the old Zulu gatekeeper, Buza, who tells her Zulu folktales
